Teaching Plan

Based on the prior observation and assistantship in the past 2 weeks, I instilled and adapted different approaches equipping and preparing me for the teaching practicum in the third week. I decided to teach the subject of science to grades 3,5 & 6.

In creating the lesson plan, I noticed how different the intended format and content of their lesson plan were compared to the Philippines. Coming from a more detailed and specific type of instructions, steps, contents, and strategies narrowed down to a more semi-detailed outline of the topic. The lessons are based on the " My Pals are Here" booklet which is their own rendition of the science booklet that puts emphasis on the scientific method or active engagement of the students towards their learning. Furthermore, it adapts the model of 5Es ( Engagement, Evaluation, Elaboration, exploration, and explanation) prioritizing the learning, development, and consolidation of the students learning through scaffolding.

In terms of the lesson plans, with the help and advice from my cooperating teacher( CT) and subject teachers,  I altered and inserted my own strategies alongside the standard format in order for the students to still have a familiar grasp of the lessons. I introduced different icebreaking and motivating activities such as "Hep-Hep Hurray", " Group yourselves", Dance routine videos, and " Guess who" in order to provide an engaging environment towards the motivation of the students. Later on, start the discussion with a PowerPoint presentation engaging students not just by reading the slides but engaging them through relating personal experiences as well as existential questioning about a topic. After the discussion, I employ both activities from the book as well as my own twist and rendition of assessments that I see as enticing and applicable to their capabilities.

Teaching Practicum

Grade 6

My First day of teaching is in grade 6. I taught about the topic of heredity: Inherited and acquired traits. I used the game " Hep Hep Hurray" which ended up enticing and engaging the students to the lesson, maybe a little too much. After that started discussions about heredity based on their experience and personal traits. In the end as a form of assessment,  I gave the task of making a " Heredity tree" listing both their inherited and acquired traits.

Grade 5

The consecutive day is teaching grade 5 about the types of cells in our body and their functions. Being that the class of grade 5 is quite fluent in English made teaching much easier. Motivating them through a "Group yourselves activity" followed by discussions and showing images and videos about cells through a PowerPoint made the students understand the concept. After that, I gave a group activity for them to draw and describe the functions of the given cell. Unfortunately, the students did not have enough time to present their work.

Grade 3

For the last teaching practicum, I taught grade 3. Given that the grade 3 students are still young, I have to use Indonesian words and phrases to teach them about the nutrients in our body. The use of a video of dance relating to nutrients helped pique the interest of the students. Utilizing the favorite foods of the students helped their introduction to the concept of nutrients in our foods and assessment of their learning.

Considerations

Additionally, despite the school having a designated therapist for special needs learners, I also provide differentiated activities and modifications that fit their abilities as well as providing extra attention to those students when in discussions or conducting an activity.
